The first three of ten sessions are outlined below. This series will provide
the family caregiver a map to navigate through the years of caring for an
elderly parent. Industry experts will provide information and tips on
resources available to ensure quality of life for the entire family.
1) When You Can’t Be There:
Selecting the Right Home Care & Adult Day Center (Feb 3)
Kathy Livingston, Senior Vice President of Senior Helpers, will discuss home care as an
option to keep loved ones safe while family members tend to the demands of life. Kathy will
review the types of agencies and questions to ask to ensure the best selection for your family,
as well as how to approach the topic with your elderly family member. Guest speaker,
Josephine Brown from Park Slope Geriatric Day Center, will discuss adult day facilities as an
additional option for safety and mental stimulation.
Senior Helpers is a companion care agency that opened in 2001 and expanded into the New
York City area in 2008. Senior Helpers provides in-home care to individuals to keep them
enjoying the independence of living at home.
2) Understanding & Managing Balance Disorders (Feb 17)
Robert Coursen, PTA at METRO SPORTSMED® Physical and Occupational Therapy will
discuss the causes and treatments of Balance Disorders. This lecture will include
understanding the possible underlying diagnosis and management of orthopedic, neurologic,
and arthritic conditions. Most therapy services are covered by insurance plans.
3) New Developments & Achieving Organization (March 3)
Susan Matlow, founder of The Matlow Group, will speak about recent developments in
personal finance issues, including changes in federal and New York estate tax and income tax
rules, new Power of Attorney requirements, and the impact of health care legislation. Susan
also will discuss how to get organized and have peace of mind that your financial affairs are
in order.
The Matlow Group is a personal finance resource for senior citizens and their families. We
create individualized plans to alleviate worries about daily financial and administrative
matters. We help you sort out complex issues, make appropriate decisions, and avoid
unexpected crises and unwanted results.
